Unending Flow of a “Small jar of Olive Oil”
In 2 Kings 4:1-7, a great miracle of multiplication is performed by the great prophet Elisha which transforms a widow who was in debts into a high profile oil business woman. This is the story;
A certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, saying, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the Lord. And the creditor is coming to take my two sons to be his slaves.” So Elisha said to her, “What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?” And she said, “Your maidservant has nothing in the house but a jar of oil.” Then he said, “Go, borrow vessels from everywhere, from all your neighbors—empty vessels; do not gather just a few. And when you have come in, you shall shut the door behind you and your sons; then pour it into all those vessels, and set aside the full ones.” So she went from him and shut the door behind her and her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured it out. Now it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said to her son, “Bring me another vessel.” And he said to her, “There is not another vessel.” So the oil ceased. Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debt; and you and your sons live on the rest.” 2 Kings 4:1-7
The above case is very inspiring, the lady in question was in great distress, she had lost her husband, had nothing to eat, inherited her husband’s debts and the worst was about to happen when her only two sons who were a consolation to her, were about to be taken as compensation for the debts owed by her late husband to his creditors. She did not panic; she did not curse God, she was conscious of what to do at that point in time. She knew someone will definitely have a solution to her problem and in this case it was the prophet of God. Instead of going to her family and friends to seek for help, she went to a prophet who had the right solution for her.
The prophet asked her a simple question which was “… what has thou in the house?”; this shows the prophet knew that in order to perform the miracle, he needed something; no matter how little it was to use (to cause the power of God to multiply it). The lady too was very wise and immediately indicated that she had nothing in the house, “save a pot of oil”. No matter how small the oil was in the pot did not matter to the Prophet of God at this time. What mattered to him was the fact that there was something available to use as a base to perform a miracle with it and immediately, the prophet caused oil to flow out of the pot continually till they had filled up all the borrowed pots.
This is the same thing that can happen to us if only we are conscious of the role of faith in our work with God. If we want God to multiply and make us progress, all He needs is for us to hold something in our hands; no matter how small. He cannot bless empty hands; all he needs is the availability of something in it no matter how small it is. Had the lady fully consumed her oil at home, the prophet would have may be faced some challenges in creating a miracle for her at that point in time.
At the end, the lady was able to sell the oil, pay off her creditors and use the rest for investment and upkeep of herself and her two sons. This happened as a result of the fact that she had faith in her prophet and knew exactly who to contact when she was in need. Most human beings have that consciousness that when things are not moving rightly, they should contact their families, friends and employers for a solution, forgetting the fact that the Holy Spirit is there to help us at every point in time. If only we could fully put our trust in God and give Him our best at every point in time, then every thing we need will be provided by God. The bible says the Word of God is living and active, which means that whatever is recorded in the bible to have happened can still happen today if we only believe. Miracles are real brethren and it is important that we believe in the workings of God. Whatever you have, NEVER consume it all, reserve a seed or an offering for the Lord for that is what the Lord will use to bless you when you call on Him. Also, reserve something to reinvest, for it is the seed that you sow or invest that will multiply and give you more than enough.
